Why Your Gravel Driveway is Washing Out in West Virginia

In most cases, the culprit is not the gravel itself, but the water

The real reasons gravel driveways wash out


A gravel driveway washout happens when water takes a path across or down the

driveway, eroding the surface and carrying gravel away with it.


This can occur due to large storms, but the process usually begins long before

the damage becomes apparent. Water will begin to undercut the gravel on a

slope or along the edge and form small ruts. Once these ruts connect to form a

channel, water will have a preferred path down the driveway.


The EPA defines stormwater runoff as "rainwater or snow melt from developed or

vegetated land that does not infiltrate the ground..." Runoff often carries sediment

with it and contributes to erosion issues if not properly handled.


On a gravel driveway, this sediment is frequently the gravel that makes up the

driveway surface, washing away one storm at a time.


Cause 1: Water is running down the driveway


This is a common issue on sloped properties


If the driveway is acting as a channel for water, it will wash out repeatedly. Water

will flow down the driveway following the wheel tracks, low spots, and other weak

areas. The faster it is able to flow, the more material it will carry with it.


Watch for:


• Ruts running the length of the driveway

• Gravel at the bottom of the slope

• Exposed dirt or clay

• Channels that begin as small ruts and grow larger with each storm

• Loosened stone on one side of the driveway


While filling ruts and adding gravel may make the driveway look nice for a while, the problem will persist if the water continues to flow down the driveway.

Cause 2: The driveway does not have the proper crown


A crowned driveway allows water to run off the edges and prevents it from

pooling in the center. If the driveway is crowned incorrectly, water will run off to

one side, creating large puddles or damaging the shoulder. A crowned driveway

allows for proper drainage and reduces the chances of erosion.

Proper drainage also extends the lifespan of a gravel driveway, preventing

erosion of the base materials and washouts.


Cause 3: The ditches are not handling the water properly


Driveway ditches are often an overlooked area on a property, but they serve an

essential function. On many properties in WV, the ditches are the only things

preventing driveway washouts.


A properly sized, cleaned, and graded ditch will carry water away from the

driveway. An undersized or plugged ditch will allow water to run down the

driveway, eroding the gravel and exposing dirt or clay.


Look for:

• Water running alongside the driveway instead of into the ditch

• Leaves, mud, or debris blocking the ditch

• Water crossing the driveway consistently

• Soft, eroded driveway shoulders

• A ditch that ends abruptly, without a stable outlet

A culvert is a pipe that allows water to flow underneath the driveway. When a

culvert works properly, it prevents water from eroding the driveway. If the culvert

becomes clogged or damaged, water will flow over or around it, causing a

washout

• Puddling on one side of the driveway

• Water flowing over the driveway surface

• Erosion around the culvert

• Water cutting into the driveway where the culvert enters or exits

Cause 5: The base was not installed correctly


A gravel driveway should be built with a solid base of compacted gravel. In some

cases, the base is not built with the proper materials or compaction, leaving the

driveway vulnerable to erosion. Water will accelerate this process, especially if the

base was built on top of loose soil.


Watch for:

• Soft spots after rain

• Ruts that quickly fill with water and erode

• Puddles or mud pumping up through the gravel

• Gravel pulling out of the ground

• Uneven patches that settle differently after rain


A weak base can cause repeated washouts, requiring the entire driveway to be reconstructed. Adding gravel on top of a weak base is often a temporary fix that only lasts until the next storm


Cause 6: Water from other areas is crossing the driveway


Many driveway washouts in Southern WV are the result of water crossing the

driveway from a different source. Water may be flowing down a slope, across the

Cause 7: Water does not have a stable exit


Even with ditches and culverts, water needs a stable place to exit the property.


If the water is flowing too quickly, into soft ground, or over exposed roots, it can

erode the ground underneath the driveway, culvert, or ditch. This can cause

washouts in the driveway or along the ditch banks. In some cases, additional rock

or proper grading is needed to slow the flow or protect the bank.

What not to do when a gravel driveway washes out


Do not continue to add gravel until the water has been redirected.


Do not repeatedly fill ruts if the water is flowing down the driveway.


Do not block the flow of water if it has nowhere else to go.


Do not ignore clogged ditches, faulty culverts, or the effects of erosion.


Do not direct water toward your home, septic, or your neighbor's property.


Do not assume that the driveway needs to be replaced if the grade or drainage is

the real issue.


Repeat washouts occur when the visible problems are patched, but the source of

the issue is ignored.


What a long-term repair should include


The repair process should always begin with finding the source of the water and

where it is going. In many cases, a combination of grading and drainage

techniques will be required to stop the erosion. This may include reshaping the

crown, rebuilding the base, repairing or replacing ditches, and replacing a faulty

culvert. It may also include adding stone to stabilize the flow, or directing the

water elsewhere so that it does not flow down or across the driveway.


In many cases, the best repair option is to combine grading and drainage to stop

the erosion.

The cost of a repair always depends on the extent of the damage and what

removal of unsuitable materials and excavation costs also play a role. A simple

surface repair is much different than addressing a steep driveway with failed

ditches, culverts, and base materials.
