Directing water to stable outlets


Grading is not about making everything flat. On hillsides, flat often means pooling. The goal is controlled shedding.


Swales and surface diversion


A swale is a shallow channel that intercepts runoff and guides it safely. It can be subtle. It does not have to look like a trench.


Swales are great for:

Intercepting water coming from uphill areas

Stopping runoff from crossing a driveway or yard

Redirecting water around sensitive areas like septic zones and building pads


The biggest mistake with swales is building one with no outlet plan. Water must be guided to a discharge point that can handle it.


Ditch shaping and lining where needed


Some sites need a ditch. Especially alongside driveways where water wants to follow the drive downhill.


A properly shaped ditch:

Collects water before it reaches the driveway surface

Guides it to a culvert or a stable outlet

Prevents edge washouts that start at the shoulder


When ditches are too shallow, they overflow. When they are too steep with no protection, they erode themselves.


Riprap and rock protection in high energy areas


Riprap is rock placed to protect a surface from erosion. It is not decorative. It is armor for high energy water.


Riprap is most useful at:

Culvert outlets

Steep ditch sections where water speed is high

Channels that must carry concentrated flow


The mistake with riprap is under sizing it. If the rock is too small, water moves it. Another mistake is placing rock without proper filter fabric or base prep, which can allow soil to wash out from underneath.

Whenever you concentrate water into a pipe, ditch, or channel, you need to think about what happens when it exits.


A good outlet plan can include:

Rock aprons and protected splash zones

Grade transitions that slow water down

Turning concentrated flow into sheet flow across a stable area

Vegetation and stabilization


On many slopes, the long term goal is stable ground cover. Bare soil is vulnerable. Once you have the grade and flow paths right, stabilizing the surface helps prevent future erosion.
